The idea
Khrushchev was ousted in nineteen sixty-four; Brezhnev ruled to eighty-two through stagnation, nominal Marxism, corruption and nepotism. In spring sixty-eight Dubček's Czechoslovakia tried socialism with a human face, free speech and workers' councils. On the twentieth of August the Warsaw Pact invaded, all but Romania.
In practice
The Brezhnev Doctrine: intervention wherever socialism was threatened.
Where people slip
The Prague Spring is named on the witness.
