The idea
The nationalists won in early nineteen thirty-nine and were recognized abroad; reprisals followed despite promises. Franco, El Caudillo, ruled a one-party state of nobles, army and Church until nineteen seventy-five. Knowing Spain's weakness he avoided expansion, and Hitler's day of courting him came to nothing.
