Western Civilization II / Unit 16   WC2 1526 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Appeasement Defined, and Defended

Captions available

The idea

Appeasement meant giving Hitler what he asked, territory, unions with German lands, an army, as legitimate grievances. The anchor defends it: the last war's horror, publics against fighting, unstable French governments. It was preserving peace, not caving, until Poland in September nineteen thirty-nine proved otherwise.

In practice

Chamberlain at Munich, Daladier unwilling to fight alone.

Where people slip

The defense is the anchor's, attributed; historians differ.
