Western Civilization II / Unit 16   WC2 1528 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Czechoslovakia Occupied, and the Nazi-Soviet Pact, 1939

Captions available

The idea

In March nineteen thirty-nine Germany occupied the rest of Czechoslovakia, the Czech lands a protectorate, Slovakia a puppet. In May the Pact of Steel bound Italy to Germany. In August the Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact, with a secret protocol dividing Poland, freed Hitler's eastern flank; Stalin expected a capitalist squabble.

In practice

The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the witness's name.

Where people slip

Appeasement ended with Prague, not Munich.
