Captions available

The idea

Eighteen percent of seats in nineteen thirty, thirty-seven percent of the vote in thirty-two, the most any party won in a free election and never a majority. Hitler lost the presidency to Hindenburg and lost votes that autumn. In January nineteen thirty-three Papen persuaded Hindenburg to make him chancellor.

In practice

Papen meant to control him from the vice-chancellorship.
