Western Civilization II / Unit 16   WC2 1521 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Spain's Old Order, Primo de Rivera, and the Republic of 1931

Captions available

The idea

Spain kept the old order: army, Church and nobility over a poor rural majority. Primo de Rivera ruled as dictator from nineteen twenty-three to thirty. In nineteen thirty-one the king left the country and a republic separated church and state and redistributed the largest estates.

In practice

Peasants attacked churches; the right closed ranks.

Where people slip

The anchor says abdicated; Alfonso left without abdicating.
