Western Civilization II / Unit 16   WC2 1518 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Working Towards the Führer: Volksgemeinschaft, Youth, Mothers

Captions available

The idea

The Weimar constitution was never repealed; overlapping bureaucracies competed to anticipate the Führer's will, the only principle. The Volksgemeinschaft enrolled everyone: leagues for workers, mothers sent home from work, the Hitler Youth for boys, the League of German Girls. Public works and then rearmament ended unemployment.

In practice

"Heil Hitler", lip service nearly universal.

Where people slip

"Working towards the Führer", a historian's phrase the anchor borrows.
