The idea

Peace with the Bolsheviks freed German divisions, and on the twenty-first of March nineteen eighteen the Spring Offensive drove within forty miles of Paris, outrunning supply. It failed by July. In late September Ludendorff, Hindenburg's operational chief, advised suing for peace.

In practice

"We cannot win the war any more", Ludendorff said.

Where people slip

The anchor calls Ludendorff chief of staff; Hindenburg held that post.
