Trench Warfare Invented, and the Christmas Truce
Captions available
The idea
Machine guns and shell craters drove both sides underground; trenches ran from the Channel to the Swiss Alps, artillery behind them and command posts behind that. At Christmas nineteen fourteen soldiers met in no man's land, traded cigarettes, and a German barber gave shaves. Headquarters made sure it never happened again.
In practice
Four more years.
Where people slip
The truce is on both sources.
