The Marne and Tannenberg: The Plan Fails on Both Fronts

Captions available

The idea

In early September nineteen fourteen the French found a gap between German armies near Paris and stopped them at the Marne. In the east Russia attacked sooner than expected and was crushed at Tannenberg, ninety thousand prisoners taken. The six-week plan was dead.

In practice

Both armies raced to the sea and dug in.

Where people slip

The anchor says late September; the witness names both.
