Western Civilization II / Unit 13 WC2 1205 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Raw Materials, Mines, and the Fear of America
Captions available
The idea
The second industrial revolution wanted rubber, ores and cotton from outside Europe's older holdings, and business pressed governments to seize them; Persian oil followed in nineteen oh-eight. Behind that ran fear: the United States overtook Europe in manufacturing from about eighteen seventy, and territory looked like a counterweight.
In practice
Canadian nickel, Chilean nitrates, Malaysian tin.
Where people slip
The anchor calls the European fear "sometimes hysterical".
