Western Civilization II / Unit 13   WC2 1208 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Sepoy Rebellion of 1857

Captions available

The idea

In eighteen fifty-seven sepoys received cartridges rumored greased with pig and cow fat; no evidence, but rumor was enough, with aggressive missionaries behind it. Anti-British violence became a civil war. Rebels killed British families; the British massacred villages. Loyal sepoys and British troops restored order.

In practice

"The Mutiny" to the British; the Sepoy Rebellion to historians.
