Africa in 1850, and the Scramble: Ten Percent to Ninety

Captions available

The idea

In eighteen fifty Europe held only coasts: French Algeria, British and Boer South Africa. Then, the anchor says, European control went from ten percent of Africa in eighteen seventy-six to about ninety by nineteen hundred. Profit, raw materials, rivalry and the civilizing mission peaked: the Scramble for Africa.

In practice

"Imperialism" an everyday word by the eighteen eighties.

Where people slip

The percentages are the anchor's.
