Western Civilization II / Unit 13   WC2 1215 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Plunder Economies, and Borders Drawn

Captions available

The idea

The anchor's term is plunder economies: land expropriated, raw materials shipped out, labor exploited from slavery to subsistence wages. Borders split and lumped peoples, and favored groups such as the Tutsi over the Hutu carried the division past independence.

In practice

Java's Dutch quotas, "semi-slavery" in the anchor's phrase.

Where people slip

"Plunder economies" is the anchor's characterization.
