The idea
The Janissaries had decayed; Mahmud II destroyed them in eighteen twenty-six. Capitulations put European merchants above the law and beyond tax. Muhammad Ali took Egypt from eighteen oh-five. The Tanzimat reforms from eighteen thirty-nine strengthened the central state and reached a constitution and parliament in eighteen seventy-six.
