The idea
Italy's treaty of eighteen eighty-nine with Menelik II had two texts: the Italian made Ethiopia a protectorate, the Amharic did not. Menelik repudiated it, bought rifles, and at Adwa in eighteen ninety-six destroyed the Italian army. Six thousand Italians died, and Ethiopia's independence was recognized.
