The Second Industrial Revolution: Steel, Electricity, Chemicals, the Telephone
Captions available
The idea
Cheap steel came with the Bessemer process in the eighteen fifties, electrical generators about eighteen seventy and the light bulb by eighteen seventy-nine, Bell's telephone in eighteen seventy-six. Demand for rubber, ores and cotton reached overseas, and the United States overtook Europe in manufacturing.
In practice
Marconi's wireless crossed the Atlantic in nineteen oh-one.
Where people slip
The anchor leaves Bessemer unnamed; the witness names him.
