Captions available

The idea

Britain's National Society for Women's Suffrage formed in eighteen sixty-seven; the word "feminist" dates from eighteen ninety, with Hubertine Auclert refusing taxes without representation. Opposition ran from biologists to Victoria's "mad, wicked folly". Before the war only Finland and Norway had granted the vote.

In practice

Britain: property-owning women over thirty, nineteen eighteen.

Where people slip

France waited until nineteen forty-four, Switzerland until nineteen seventy-one.
