Western Civilization II / Unit 11   WC2 1027 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Dreyfus Affair

Captions available

The idea

In the eighteen nineties Dreyfus, a Jewish officer, was framed for espionage. Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards fought over whether a Jew could be French. Dreyfus was exonerated. Anti-Semitism became, the anchor says, a defining trait of France's authoritarian right, and Herzl's Zionism answered.

In practice

Can a Jew be French, the question asked.

Where people slip

Herzl on WH2; the affair itself is anchor-only.
