The idea
After eighteen seventy-one Bismarck aimed to keep France isolated. The League of Three Emperors joined Germany, Austria and Russia; the Dual Alliance followed in eighteen seventy-nine, Italy joined in eighteen eighty-two, and a Reinsurance Treaty with Russia covered the gap when Austria and Russia quarrelled.
