Western Civilization II / Unit 11 WC2 1026 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Boulanger, and a Republic That Survived Its Enemies
Captions available
The idea
The Republic began as a stopgap most deputies expected a monarchy to replace. It survived monarchists, then a general whom crowds urged toward a coup in the eighteen eighties; he fled instead. A republic held by default outlasted rivals who could not agree on a king.
In practice
The Republic lasted until nineteen forty.
Where people slip
Boulanger is named in no source; disclosed at 1824.
