The idea
Berber polytheists were forced to convert or die, then served as auxiliaries, which explains Spain's easy conquest. Zoroastrians were accepted as People of the Book, then not, and Parsees reached India. Jews prospered under Muslim rule while Christian kingdoms hardened.
