Sample Question Eight: The Dhimma Behind the Charter

Captions available

The idea

The eighth sample question asks which feature of Islamic Spain most directly influenced the charter's provisions on religious practice and law, offering the dhimma's rules for minorities, the Arabization of Christians and Jews, marketplace regulation, scholarly cooperation, and Christian and Jewish officials in the Umayyad bureaucracy. The method is to match the charter's shape to its model.

In practice

The charter lets a subordinate community keep its own law and worship in exchange for tax and deference. That is the dhimma's shape exactly, the status Muslims had given Christians and Jews for five centuries, with the head tax, the jizya, at its center, which unit 09 teaches at 0830 and reads in the Pact of Umar at 0839. Arabization explains language, not law. Marketplace rules, scholarly cooperation and Jewish officials at Cordoba are real features of al-Andalus that do not produce a charter of religious autonomy. The answer is the dhimma.

Where people slip

The exam pairs conqueror and conquered on purpose: Christians applied to Muslims the arrangement Muslims had applied to them. Do not answer that either was tolerant in the modern sense; both regulated a subordinate community, and both are the record.
