Sample Question Nine: What Trent Did Not Do

The idea

The ninth sample question asks which of five measures the Council of Trent did not enact in response to the Reformation: greater powers to the Inquisition, reaffirming indulgences, rejecting faith alone, encouraging missions outside Europe, and requiring the Latin Bible to be translated into vernaculars. The method for an except question is to confirm the four that are true and find the one that is false.

In practice

The Inquisition was strengthened, its Roman office permanent from fifteen forty-two: true. Indulgences were reaffirmed as legitimate while their sale for cash was banned: true. Faith alone was rejected in favor of faith with works: true. Missions went out with the Jesuits to Japan in fifteen forty-nine and beyond: true. Vernacular Bibles were not required; Paul IV insisted the Bible remain in Latin so laypeople would not misread it, as unit 15 teaches at 1416. The answer is the vernacular Bible, and the anchor states the Latin-only policy in so many words.

Where people slip

The trap is Trent's one real change, seminaries, which is not on the list, and the confusion between reaffirming indulgences and banning their sale, which are both true. Trent kept doctrine and changed clergy; it never gave the laity the Bible in their own tongue.
