Sample Question Seven: Conquest With Regulation

Captions available

The idea

The seventh sample question asks which feature of Christian conquest in Iberia the charter most directly illustrates, offering large-scale Christian settlement with incentives, Berber-Arab conflict aiding conquest, regulation of relations between religious communities, missionary arrivals, and confiscation of the best land. The method is to read what the document does, not what else happened in the period.

In practice

The charter grants terms to a Muslim community: their law, judges, religion and property within limits, in exchange for submission and taxes. It says nothing about Christian settlers, nothing about Berbers and Arabs, nothing about missionaries, nothing about confiscation, though each of those happened somewhere in the Reconquista. What it does, line by line, is regulate how the conquered community will live beside the conqueror. The answer is regulation of relations between religious communities, and unit 11's entry 1038 reads the charter that way.

Where people slip

The distractors describe real features of the Reconquista, which is the trap: the question asks what this passage illustrates, and only regulation is in the text. Answer from the document, and let the course's other entries hold the rest.
