Dhimmis: The Head Tax and Tolerance Within Limits
Captions available
The idea
The Koran forbids forcible conversion of Jews and Christians. As dhimmis they paid a head tax, the jizya, and held no share in government or spoils; many preferred Arab rule to Byzantine persecution of sects. Only about ten percent of subjects were Muslim under the Umayyads.
In practice
Sample question eight: the rules for religious minorities.
Where people slip
Tolerance within a secondary status. State both halves.
