The idea
Cordoba claimed its own caliphate and the Shia Fatimids took Egypt. In nine forty-five the Buyids, a witness name, made the caliph a figurehead; the Seljuks did the same in ten fifty-five. In twelve fifty-eight the Mongols killed the last caliph.
In practice
Two centuries of spiritual deference without power.
Where people slip
The caliphate outlived its power by three centuries.
