The First Crusade and the Latin Principalities, 1099

The idea
The First Crusade, ten ninety-five to ten ninety-nine, succeeded because the caliphate had splintered, Sunni fought Shia, and Seljuks fought Arabs. Jerusalem fell in ten ninety-nine, and Latin principalities held the coast.
In practice
The People's Crusade, unarmed commoners, went first and died.
Where people slip
The principalities never tried to win Muslim or Jewish subjects. Later crusades failed.
