Templars and Hospitallers: Monk-Knights and Bankers
Captions available
The idea
After the First Crusade, orders of monk-knights under monastic vows formed to protect pilgrims. The Templars and Hospitallers guarded caravans, lent money, and grew rich and powerful despite vows of poverty; the Templars were bankers after eleven eighty-seven.
In practice
Armed merchant houses more than monasteries, the anchor says.
Where people slip
Vow and bank in one institution. The exam likes the contrast.
