The idea

The exam gives four high-medieval events and asks their order, and the trap is that Church, crusade and crown run in parallel. The method is three tracks with one shared anchor each. Church: Cluny nine ten, Canossa ten seventy-seven, Worms eleven twenty-two, Lateran twelve fifteen. Crusade: Clermont ten ninety-five, Jerusalem ten ninety-nine, Hattin eleven eighty-seven, Constantinople twelve oh four, Las Navas twelve twelve. Crown: Hastings ten sixty-six, Bologna eleven fifty-eight, Magna Carta twelve fifteen, Philip IV thirteen oh seven.

In practice

Merge them. The Schism of ten fifty-four precedes Hastings and Canossa. Canossa comes eighteen years before Clermont. Worms in eleven twenty-two comes after the First Crusade and before Hattin. Bologna's charter in eleven fifty-eight sits between Worms and Hattin. Twelve oh four, twelve twelve and twelve fifteen fall in that order: Constantinople, Las Navas, then Magna Carta and Lateran in the same year. Philip IV's seizure of the Templars in thirteen oh seven ends the unit. Read: Schism, Hastings, Canossa, Clermont, Jerusalem, Worms, Bologna, Hattin, Constantinople, Las Navas, twelve fifteen, thirteen oh seven.

Where people slip

Magna Carta and the Fourth Lateran Council share twelve fifteen, so a question cannot ask which came first; it can ask which belongs to which track. And Cluny's founding in nine ten belongs to unit 10's century though its fruit is Gregory VII.
