Capstone One: Your Inventory and Map

The idea

The first capstone task, constructed for this course, asks you to take one area of your own work through phase one, the way the library and the hospital did.

In practice

Choose one area of work you know well, small enough to map in a sitting: a team's requests, a department's cases, a service's orders. Listen for nouns. Use the four interview questions on yourself, or better, on two colleagues, and do not skip the auditor question. Build an Object Inventory of ten to thirty rows, each with a name, a type, a one- or two-sentence description, an importance and notes. Mark any word that means different things to different people. Then name three to six zones in your organization's own words, place each thing in its primary zone, and draw the arrows with a verb on each, focusing on what creates what, what contains what, and what an auditor would need linked. Highlight three to seven core things. If you use an AI tool, give it your own text, ask for candidates only, and keep a note of anything it suggested that you removed. Judge your work against the Toolbox's first-two-weeks checklist, and write one sentence on the thing you would never have listed without the auditor question.

Where people slip

The task is finished when someone who does the work looks at your map and says that is basically our world, not when the map is complete. If nobody disagrees with anything, show it to someone else. For comparison, the library's first inventory had thirteen rows and four core things, and its most valuable result, the Loan Policy Version, came from a single auditor question that took two minutes to ask.
