Spotting the Four Anti-Patterns
The idea
The book names four common anti-patterns, and each one leaves the system's material undefined in a different way.
In practice
Step one: look at the main specification. If answering what a case is means reading four separate sections, you have the giant specification nobody believes. Step two: look at the backlog. If one idea goes by case, file and record, you have the backlog swamp. Step three: look for domain diagrams. If the business has never accepted them and the code has drifted from them, you have the diagram that never became a contract. Step four: listen for the phrase "that's a design detail" whenever someone asks what fields a thing has. That is the fourth pattern, leaving it all for design.
Where people slip
Each pattern looks like a process problem; underneath, all four are the same material problem.
