The M-CaReM-AI Method: Defining Work for AI / Unit 1 MCM 016 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Reading a Domain for Its Things
The idea
The book reads three different domains as collections of things, and the same reading works on any system.
In practice
Step one: name the domain and the work it supports, for example hospital incidents, benefits eligibility, or a project portfolio. Step two: list the records the work cannot do without. For incidents, that means the Incident Report, the Location, the Action Plan and the Audit Log Entry. For eligibility, it means the Application, the Household, the Eligibility Determination and the Policy Version. Step three: take each feature in turn and say which of those things it creates, reads or changes. Step four: mark any thing that no one can describe in a sentence or two. That mark is where understanding is missing, however many features you can list.
Where people slip
The reading is quick, and it is most useful early, before features are designed around things nobody has defined.
