Catheters and Tubes at Transfer

Captions available

The idea

At the end of surgery, every catheter, drain and tube is secured and recorded so nothing is dislodged or forgotten during transfer.

In practice

Follow the check in order. First, urinary catheters are secured and their tubing kept free of kinks. Second, drains are secured and connected to their collection devices. Third, intravenous lines are checked by the anesthesia team. Fourth, every tube and drain is listed for the recovery report, with its location. Fifth, during the move to the stretcher, someone is assigned to protect the lines and tubes. Sixth, after the move, each line is checked again to confirm it is still connected and secured.

Where people slip

Many patients leave surgery with several tubes, and a single tug during transfer can pull one out. Count them before the move, and protect them during it.
