Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 26 TSC 644 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Skin Assessment at the End
The idea
At the end of surgery, the patient's skin is checked for injuries from positioning, devices or energy, and findings are documented.
In practice
Follow the check in order. First, look at pressure points that bore weight during the case, such as heels, elbows, the back of the head and, in prone cases, the face and chest. Second, look at the dispersive pad site after removing the pad. Third, look under and around devices, such as straps and positioning supports. Fourth, look at areas where prep solution may have pooled. Fifth, document what is found and report any injury to the surgeon and the recovery nurse.
Where people slip
Injuries found now can be treated and followed; injuries missed now are found later, without anyone knowing when or how they happened.
