Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 27 TSC 652 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Confirming What Was Done
The idea
The procedure actually performed is confirmed at the end of surgery, because it may differ from the one scheduled.
In practice
Follow why and how. First, procedures can change or expand during surgery, for example when a laparoscopic case converts to open or an additional problem is found. Second, the circulating nurse asks the surgeon to confirm exactly what was done, either as a question or as a confirmation. Third, the confirmed procedure is recorded. Fourth, any change from the planned procedure is passed on to the recovery team. Fifth, the record then matches what the patient actually received, which matters for their care, their consent records and any later review.
Where people slip
A record that shows the scheduled procedure rather than the one performed can mislead everyone who reads it afterward. Confirming it aloud takes seconds.
