Breathing Problems After Surgery

Captions available

The idea

After surgery, collapsed areas of lung, called atelectasis, and pneumonia are common breathing complications.

In practice

Signs include reduced breath sounds, low oxygen levels and rapid breathing; deep breathing, coughing and early movement help prevent them.

Where people slip

Anesthesia and pain both reduce deep breathing, which is why recovery teams encourage it.
