Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 26 TSC 636 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Drains at the End of the Case
The idea
Drains placed during surgery are secured and dressed at the end of the case, and their details are passed to the recovery team.
In practice
Follow the end-of-case steps for a drain. First, the drain is secured, usually by suture to the skin. Second, its exit site is covered with a sterile dressing. Third, it is connected to its collection device, off the sterile field. Fourth, the circulating nurse records each drain and its location. Fifth, drains and their locations are included in the report to the recovery nurse, together with the dressings, so the next team knows exactly what is in place. Drains are devices, so they are also accounted for under the facility's tracking process.
Where people slip
A drain pulled during transfer can mean another procedure, so drains are protected as the patient is moved off the table.
