Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 21 TSC 510 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Securing a Drain
Captions available
The idea
Drains are usually sutured to the skin to keep them from being pulled out.
In practice
The scrub person prepares the securing suture and the dressing; the drain is then connected to its collection device off the sterile field.
Where people slip
A drain pulled out by accident during transfer may need another procedure, so it is protected during patient movement.
