The idea
Packing is gauze or other material placed into a wound or cavity, for example to fill dead space, keep a wound bed moist, or control bleeding.
In practice
Deep wounds may be packed with moistened gauze; packing can also apply pressure to control bleeding.
Where people slip
Packing left in a patient is documented, because it must be removed later and is easy to forget.
