Sponges and Their Types

The idea
Surgical sponges come in many sizes and shapes, all with X-ray detectable markers when used inside a wound.
In practice
Types include large laparotomy pads, smaller pads, square gauze sponges, round tonsil sponges, small dissecting sponges, and small patties used in neurosurgery.
Where people slip
Small sponges are easy to lose in a wound, so they are kept accounted for at all times.
