Small Miscellaneous Items
The idea
Small miscellaneous items are a class of counted items that are often single-use, often not visible on X-ray, and sometimes made of several parts.
In practice
Learn the class by example. First, electrosurgical scratch pads and electrosurgical tips. Second, vessel loops and umbilical tapes. Third, rubber protective tips and suture holders. Fourth, laparoscopic port parts and disposable instrument inserts. Fifth, cotton-tipped applicators. Sixth, small hardware such as clips, tapes or drill bits. Because many of these items will not show on an X-ray, accurate counting and tracking is the main protection against leaving one behind.
Where people slip
Small items are the easiest to overlook at the count. Add each one to the count as it is opened, and keep them in a consistent place on the field.
