Ostomies in Plain Terms

Captions available

The idea

An ostomy is a surgically created opening from an internal organ to the outside of the body.

In practice

A colostomy opens the colon to the outside of the abdomen; a urostomy creates an opening for urine to leave the body.

Where people slip

A new ostomy is dressed or fitted as the surgeon directs, and its presence is reported to the recovery nurse.
