Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 26   TSC 631 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Intention

Captions available

The idea

Wounds heal by primary, secondary or tertiary intention, depending on how they are closed.

In practice

Primary: edges closed together. Secondary: edges cannot meet, so the wound fills in from the bottom. Tertiary: left open or reopened, often for infection, and closed later.

Where people slip

Secondary and tertiary healing take longer and leave more scar, and open wounds must be protected from contamination.
