Dressings and Their Purpose

Captions available

The idea

A dressing covers and protects a wound, and its type is chosen for the wound and the amount of drainage.

In practice

Learn what a dressing does, in order. First, it protects the wound from contamination and injury. Second, it keeps the right level of moisture in the wound bed: neither too dry nor too wet. Third, it absorbs drainage, with more absorbent dressings used where drainage is heavy. Fourth, it can support the wound or apply gentle pressure, with bandages or binders. Fifth, it is applied with sterile technique over a fresh surgical incision.

Where people slip

The dressing is the last item to go on before the patient leaves the sterile field, and it is placed after the final count. Have it ready, open, and sized to the wound before closure ends.
