The idea
Surgery is sorted by timing into three categories: elective, urgent and emergency.
In practice
A joint replacement is planned and elective; a broken long bone is often urgent, done within a day or two; active bleeding is an emergency, done at once.
Where people slip
Delaying urgent surgery can let a condition become life-threatening, which is why it cannot wait for a planned slot.
