The idea
Perioperative care has three phases: preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative.
In practice
The intraoperative phase begins when the patient is moved onto the operating table and ends at transfer to the post-anesthesia care unit, often called the PACU.
Where people slip
The scrub role works mostly in the middle phase, but what happened before it, and what follows, shapes every step at the field.
