Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 16 TSC 379 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Before the Patient Leaves
The idea
The final pause happens before the patient leaves the operating room, often during wound closure, so that important information passes to the next team.
In practice
Walk the checks in order. First, the team confirms the name of the procedure actually performed, which may have changed during the case. Second, the scrub person or circulating nurse confirms that the final instrument, sponge and needle counts are complete and correct. Third, specimen labels are read aloud, including the patient's name and the specimen description. Fourth, any equipment problems are identified so they can be fixed. Fifth, the surgeon, anesthesia provider and nurse review the key concerns for the patient's recovery.
Where people slip
This pause should happen before the surgeon leaves the room. Once key people have gone, an incorrect count or a mislabelled specimen is much harder to resolve.
