Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 16 TSC 378 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Time Out Before Incision
The idea
The time out is a brief pause immediately before the first incision, in which the whole team confirms the essential details together.
In practice
Walk the time out in order. First, every team member introduces themself by name and role. Second, the team confirms the patient's name, the procedure, the incision site and, where relevant, the position; the surgeon, anesthesia provider and circulating nurse each confirm their agreement. Third, the team confirms that preventive antibiotics were given within the window set by protocol, or gives them now. Fourth, each discipline reviews anticipated critical events. Fifth, the team confirms that essential imaging is displayed. Distractions are kept down throughout, and the procedure is read from the consent form.
Where people slip
The time out is the last chance to catch an error before the patient is cut. Anyone who has a concern raises it here, and the incision waits until it is resolved.
