Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 16 TSC 377 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Before Induction
The idea
The first pause happens before anesthesia begins, with at least the anesthesia provider and nursing staff present.
In practice
Walk the checks in order. First, the patient confirms their identity, the site, the procedure and consent; when the patient cannot, a guardian or family member may. Second, the site is confirmed as marked where required. Third, the anesthesia provider confirms the anesthesia safety check is complete. Fourth, a working pulse oximeter is on the patient. Fifth, the patient's allergies are asked about and stated. Sixth, the anesthesia team confirms whether the patient has a difficult airway or a risk of aspiration, and prepares help and equipment if so. Seventh, the team confirms whether major blood loss is a risk, and if so, that adequate intravenous access and blood or fluids are available.
Where people slip
The scrub person may be setting up during this pause, but anything learned here, an allergy, a high bleeding risk, a difficult airway, changes what the field should have ready.
